I have a pretty love hate relationship with social media at the best of times but recently Twitter management has become questionable to the point that I really don't know if it is going to be around long term. The promise of the Internet was a free and decentralized communication tool that would give all voices at least a chance to be heard. Twitter has recently taken actions that are diametrically opposed to that vision and as such I thought it was worth it to investigate the alternatives. I've been on Mastodon for a day now and although the UI leaves a lot to be desired I think the fundamentally decentralized structure might help it avoid the fate of previous social media sites.
